Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, an aspiring National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state institutions to intimidate members of the opposition.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Kay alleged that opposition figures are being subjected to arbitrary arrests, harassment and intimidation, describing the actions as a violation of their fundamental human rights.
He further claimed that security agencies were carrying out what he described as “Rambo-style” arrests targeting members of the NPP, but urged party supporters not to lose confidence.
According to him, the party remains united and should remain calm despite what he characterised as hostile treatment of its officials.
Commenting on the reported arrest of Denis Miracles Aboagye, Special Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Nana Kay said the party was still awaiting clarity on the circumstances surrounding the detention. He noted that until Aboagye is granted access to his lawyers and family, the NPP cannot officially confirm the reasons for his arrest.
Expressing concern over the country’s political climate, he alleged that Ghana’s democratic principles were under threat.
“The human rights we have protected and the NDC is destroying the democracy we have safeguarded for over three decades in just four years. I am afraid of what is happening,” he said.
Nana Kay also criticised the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, reminding him that political office is temporary.
While maintaining that he supports EOCO carrying out its lawful responsibilities, he questioned whether the agency was the appropriate institution to investigate the allegations reportedly linked to Miracles Aboagye.
“The second coming of President John Dramani Mahama was supposed to bring development, but instead, it appears everything possible is being done to destroy the NPP. We want to state categorically that the NPP is strong and resolute, and nothing can intimidate us. They can even arrest Dr Bawumia, but nothing will stop us from criticising this very wicked government.
“People have died as a result of floods in this country, yet the Greater Accra Regional Minister is receiving a Best Minister’s Award,” he added.
He also accused the government of hypocrisy, pointing to COCOBOD Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi. According to Nana Kay, Gyamfi had been highly critical of flooding under the previous NPP administration, yet Ghana is now experiencing even more severe flooding under the current government.
Nana Kay maintained that the reported arrest of Miracles Aboagye amounted to intimidation and an abuse of power. He further alleged that the administration’s approach to governance resembled that of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, whom he accused of suppressing political opponents.
In a related matter, he criticised the manner in which broadcast journalist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was arrested. Although he said he supports lawful arrests where there are legitimate grounds, he alleged that Afrifa-Mensah was assaulted and manhandled by police officers during the operation, an approach he strongly condemned.
