The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has blamed the Mahama administration for the devastating floods that affected parts of Accra and other communities on June 29, 2026, urging the government to take more decisive action to tackle the country’s recurring flooding problem.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 29, the party expressed sympathy to those affected by the disaster while criticising the government’s response.
“The New Patriotic Party joins in commiserations with the thousands of Ghanaians affected by the floods of June 29, 2026,” the statement said.
The party further urged the government to move beyond rhetoric and implement effective flood control measures.
“We urge the NDC government under President Mahama to stop paying lip service to the urgent flood control needs of the country and act with a sense of seriousness to deal with the situation,” it stated.
According to the NPP, several areas, including the N1 Highway, Apenkwa, Achimota, Kaneshie, Weija, Spintex, Darkuman Junction and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, were severely affected by the floods.
The party argued that the current arrangement for managing flood control under the Mahama administration appears fragmented, with responsibilities spread across multiple ministries.
It also questioned the implementation of anti-flood interventions and the utilisation of funds allocated for drainage projects.
The NPP further referenced President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments that flooding is partly caused by human behaviour and poor environmental practices, but insisted that the government must adopt a more coordinated and proactive approach to prevent future disasters.
The party called on the government to prioritise long-term flood mitigation measures to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure in flood-prone communities.
