A Volta Regional Communications Team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Japhet Festus Gbede, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its reaction to the investigation involving Dennis Miracles Aboagye, arguing that calls for protests undermine accountability and the rule of law.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Gbede, who also serves as the Assemblymember for the Wuxor Have and Sremanu Electoral Area, said the opposition’s decision to mobilise demonstrations rather than demand an independent investigation raises questions about its commitment to justice and national development.
According to him, any political party that responds to an investigation with protests rather than a call for the truth risks placing partisan interests above the country’s welfare.
“If your first reaction to the Dennis Miracles Aboagye investigation is to protest instead of demanding the truth, then your loyalty is not to Ghana,” he stated.
Gbede stressed that Ghana’s democracy depends on strong state institutions that are allowed to operate without political pressure or intimidation. He argued that allegations of wrongdoing should be investigated impartially, regardless of the political affiliation of those involved.
He further accused sections of the opposition of attempting to politicise investigations whenever state agencies scrutinise prominent political figures, insisting that accountability should not be confused with political persecution.
“The era of treating party affiliation as a licence to evade scrutiny must come to an end. No individual is above the law, and no political party owns the justice system. Let investigators investigate. Let the courts adjudicate. Let evidence prevail over propaganda, facts over emotions, and justice over political intimidation,” he added.
Gbede urged all political actors to respect due process and allow investigative and judicial institutions to perform their constitutional duties without interference.
His comments come amid growing political debate over the investigation involving Dennis Miracles Aboagye, with supporters of both the NDC and NPP sharply expressing differing views on the matter.
While the NPP has criticised the circumstances surrounding Aboagye’s arrest and bail conditions, Gbede maintains that the appropriate course of action is to allow the legal process to run its full course while safeguarding due process and the rule of law.
