A man has died after returning to his flooded home to retrieve his belongings shortly after rescuing his family from rising floodwaters at Kpometey, also known as Freetown, in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The Assembly Member for the area, Mustapha Mohammed, confirmed the incident in an interview with Channel One TV on June 30, 2026, describing it as the only flood-related death he could verify within his electoral area.
According to him, the deceased had successfully evacuated his wives and children after they became trapped by floodwaters before deciding to return to the house.
“I learnt he was able to rescue all his family members and move them out after they were trapped by the flood. But according to what I was told, he went back to take something from the wardrobe. Unfortunately, the wardrobe fell on him, and that was it. He wasn’t able to help himself,” Mohammed said.
The assembly member said the man was trapped after the wardrobe collapsed on him, preventing him from escaping.
The incident occurred during widespread flooding triggered by heavy rainfall, which displaced residents and forced many households to seek temporary shelter in affected communities.
Authorities have continued to assess the impact of the floods as emergency response teams assist affected residents across several parts of the country.
