Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has criticised former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame over his concerns about a fair trial in the case involving former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) CEO Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on July 6, 2026, Kpebu argued that Dame’s comments were inconsistent with his conduct while serving as Attorney General.
He cited the case of retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Benjamin Agordzo, who was denied permission to travel while standing trial in the alleged coup plot case.
“I think that, to be fair, Dame should not refer to his conduct whilst he was in office, when dealing with Hanan’s case. Otherwise, then he’s digging up all the dead bodies,” Kpebu said.
He recalled representing Agordzo and claimed Dame opposed the former police officer’s request to travel abroad for training.
“I am one practical or concrete example of a lawyer who was in a case in which Dame opposed DCOP Dr Benjamin Agordzo’s travel… DCOP Benjamin Agordzo was prevented from travelling,” he stated.
Kpebu acknowledged that Dame was not solely responsible for decisions made during his tenure but noted that he personally led the prosecution in the case.
“If they had agreed, the trial judge would have found it difficult to refuse because they would have been looking at the three judges. They would have found it almost impossible to refuse,” he added.
The lawyer also referenced the leaked audio involving Dame and businessman Richard Jakpa during the ambulance procurement trial, arguing that it raised concerns about fair trial principles.
“The infamous Jakpa tape comes to play. Godfred Dame was caught on tape saying that he had no case against Jakpa and Ato Forson, but that especially for Ato Forson, he was being pressed to get a conviction at all costs so that there would be a by-election,” he alleged.
Kpebu said Dame’s recent comments risk reopening debate about his own conduct while in office.
His remarks follow the rearrest of former NAFCO CEO Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba at the Accra International Airport on July 4 after investigators alleged he attempted to withdraw funds from a frozen bank account before travelling to the United Kingdom.
Hanan is currently standing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the state.
