New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has raised concerns about the growing uncertainty many young Ghanaians face as they search for jobs, build businesses and plan their futures.
In a message marking International Youth Day, the former Vice President acknowledged the difficulties confronting young people across the country, particularly those looking for employment in an increasingly challenging environment.
He said the situation extends beyond job seekers, noting that young people who want to establish businesses also face significant financial pressures.
“The cost of starting and sustaining a business is high, and too many young people feel uncertain about what lies ahead,” he said.
Dr Bawumia, however, said he remained optimistic about the potential of Ghana’s youth, describing their talent and determination as one of the country’s greatest strengths.
“But I remain convinced that Ghana’s greatest strength is the talent and determination of our young people. Our responsibility is to make sure opportunity keeps pace with their ambition,” he stated.
In his message, he reflected on his interactions with young Ghanaians from different backgrounds, including students, artisans, young professionals, entrepreneurs, farmers and those still searching for opportunities.
According to him, while their circumstances may differ, many share similar aspirations, including finding decent employment, starting their own businesses, living with dignity and having confidence in the future.
“I know these hopes have been tested. Jobs are not easy to find, the cost of starting and sustaining a business is high, and too many young people feel uncertain about what lies ahead,” he said.
He stressed that Ghana’s young population needed an environment where opportunities could match their ambitions, arguing that this would be crucial to helping them build the future they desire.
“Different contexts, common aspirations and a shared belief that Ghana can be a place where young people build the future they want,” he added.
