Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has warned that residents of Gomoa could declare the government an enemy of the area if authorities fail to ensure justice following the deadly violence in New Winneba.
The warning comes after clashes in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, left at least three people dead and about 15 others injured.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, A-Plus called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the police to arrest and prosecute those responsible.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm, but insisted that the authorities must demonstrate that the law applies to everyone.
“We want the IGP to come. I am going to speak with my people. I am going to ask everybody to remain calm, but we want the law to take its course,” he said.
A-Plus warned that failure to deliver justice could trigger a strong response from traditional and community leaders in Gomoa.
He said the community would give the authorities seven days to act, after which the people of Gomoa could mobilise their chiefs and formally declare the government an enemy of the area.
“We are very serious,” he stressed.
The MP attributed the tension to a long-running dispute over land, alleging that certain individuals had taken control of lands in the area and were operating as landguards.
“There are a few people who have made themselves landguards and are causing havoc. Everyone knows their boundary,” he stated.
According to A-Plus, attempts had already been made to resolve the land-related disagreements before the situation deteriorated.
He said he had petitioned both the Lands Commission and the Minister of the Interior concerning the disputed properties and had received a report detailing lands belonging to Effutu and Gomoa.
“I petitioned the Interior Minister and he also informed the police to take up the matter even before it escalated,” he said.
The MP also raised questions about the police response during Tuesday’s disturbances.
He alleged that some of the residents involved in the demonstration were unarmed while police officers discharged firearms.
“Today, the people said they were demonstrating, they were gunless; the police were rather firing guns,” he claimed.
A-Plus is calling for the Inspector-General of Police to personally visit New Winneba and investigate the events surrounding the violence.
“As the MP for Gomoa Central, IGP must come here. The boys know where their power is coming from,” he said.
He further alleged that some police officers may be benefiting from the activities of individuals involved in the disputed land issues, and called for those claims to be investigated.
“Some of the police are benefiting from them. We will not allow it to go on. Those people who perpetrated this are walking freely,” he alleged.
A-Plus also rejected attempts to frame the incident as a broader conflict between the Effutu and Gomoa communities.
According to him, the dispute is instead centred on specific individuals whom he accused of illegally taking control of lands in New Winneba.
“It’s not a fight between Effutu and Gomoa,” he said, insisting that the violence was linked to alleged landguard activities and disputed ownership.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says it has contained the violence.
In a statement, the police said trouble started at about 10:40 a.m. when a group of approximately 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks entered New Winneba Township.
The group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops and other properties.
At least three people were killed in the violence, while around 15 others sustained injuries. The injured, including a police officer, were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
With tensions still high, A-Plus is demanding swift action from the police and other state authorities to identify those responsible and restore confidence among residents.
