Former President of the National Graduate Association of Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has alleged that he turned down several lucrative offers intended to influence the inclusion of LGBTQ-related content in educational materials during his tenure.

Speaking in a video shared on Facebook on May 31, 2026, Carbonu claimed he was approached multiple times with significant financial inducements to allow LGBTQ sentiments to be quietly introduced into certain educational documents.

“I have been enticed several times with huge sums of money to allow some of these sentiments of LGBTQ to pass through certain documents, albeit silently, and I can assure you and trust me on this, I vehemently rejected it,” he stated.

According to him, the experiences raised concerns about the level of funding and support dedicated to LGBTQ advocacy efforts globally.

He questioned what motivates individuals and organisations to invest substantial resources in promoting LGBTQ-related programmes.

“The verve, the emotion, the willingness and readiness to let out huge sums of money, the calibre of people who support these programmes all over the world, my question is: what motivates them?” he asked.

Carbonu further alleged that some meetings organised by diplomatic missions in Accra often shifted toward discussions on LGBTQ issues, despite being presented under broader themes.

“As President of NAGRAT, I was invited to several embassies in Accra to attend meetings. The theme of these meetings was very ambiguous, to say the least. It was when you went for the meeting that you realised that the discussions began gradually to zero in on specific issues of LGBTQ,” he claimed.

The former teachers’ union leader also argued that Ghana’s education sector faces more urgent challenges that require greater attention and resources.

“There are weightier matters in the education field than LGBTQ,” he stressed.

His comments come amid renewed national discussions on LGBTQ-related issues following Parliament’s recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
