The Accra High Court has denied a bail application for Salomey Awity Bafoh, a nurse and mother of three, who has been remanded in connection with a case involving social media critic Ghana Jollof.
The court reportedly refused the bail application after considering concerns surrounding the ongoing cyber-related investigation.
According to her lawyer, Nana Baffour Awuah, the court was concerned that releasing Bafoh could allow her to interfere with or delete information that investigators may consider relevant to the case.
Speaking at a press conference after the hearing, the lawyer said the court relied on the nature of the investigation in reaching its decision.
“The court said that investigations are ongoing. The investigations are cyber-related; therefore, releasing the woman may result in her deleting all the information that could serve as evidence,” Baffour Awuah said.
The court has therefore maintained Bafoh’s two-week remand while investigations continue.
Her lawyer’s account indicates that the court’s primary concern was the possibility of evidence being deleted or otherwise compromised if she were released on bail.
The case has attracted attention because of its connection to the Ghana Jollof social media platform and the ongoing cyber-related investigation.
For now, Bafoh will remain in custody as investigators continue their work, while her legal team considers its next steps.
