The Ga Traditional Council has directed all shops, markets and commercial establishments within Accra to close from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, in support of the National General Cleaning Days exercise.
The directive, announced in a press statement dated July 7, 2026, was issued by the Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, in collaboration with the government and the Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister.
According to the Council, the cleanup campaign is being organised in partnership with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the Office of the Accra Mayor to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding across the capital.
The Council said the temporary closure of businesses will allow residents to participate in cleaning streets actively, desilting drains and clearing waste from public spaces.
“To ensure our streets are purged of filth and our drains restored to health, the Ga Traditional Council orders that all shops, markets and commercial entities within Accra remain closed between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on both days,” the statement said.
The directive applies to all businesses operating within Accra, except emergency services, essential healthcare facilities and authorised sanitation personnel.
The Council urged residents and business owners to fully support the exercise, describing it as a shared responsibility to protect lives and improve the city’s environment.
“Let every citizen rise to this call with discipline. When we cease our trading to cleanse our land, we secure our future and uphold the dignity of our people. A clean Accra is the strength of the Ga State and the pride of our nation,” the statement added.
The National General Cleaning Days initiative forms part of efforts by the government and local authorities to improve sanitation following recent flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
