For years, Francis Amuzu’s international future appeared destined for Belgium. Now, after a long journey through European football and a change in direction at national team level, the Grêmio winger is preparing for his first opportunity with Ghana’s senior national team.
The 26-year-old has received his maiden Black Stars call-up from head coach Carlos Queiroz ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Mexico on May 22, 2026.
Born in Ghana on August 23, 1999, Amuzu relocated to Belgium at a young age, where he began developing his football career through youth setups including SK Heffen, Mechelen and the JMG Academy in Lier.
His rise through the ranks eventually earned him a professional contract with Belgian giants Anderlecht on August 23, 2015. He later made his senior debut in a 1-0 Belgian First Division A victory over Eupen.
Amuzu continued to establish himself at the club and made his European debut on September 20, 2018, featuring in a UEFA Europa League clash against Spartak Trnava. A year later, he reached the milestone of 50 Belgian Pro League appearances in a game against Sporting Charleroi.
One of the standout moments of his Anderlecht career came on November 28, 2024, when he scored a dramatic late equaliser against FC Porto in the UEFA Europa League group stage after replacing Samuel Edozie in the second half.
By the time he left Anderlecht, Amuzu had recorded 28 goals and 24 assists in 250 official appearances for the club.
On February 10, 2025, Brazilian side Grêmio announced his signing on a permanent deal that runs until December 2026.
At international level, Amuzu had long been regarded as part of Belgium’s future plans. Eligible to represent both Ghana and Belgium, he initially committed to the European nation and featured prominently at youth level.
He even scored the winning goal on his Belgium Under-21 debut during a friendly against Italy in October 2018.
In 2022, Amuzu fully committed his international future to Belgium in the hope of earning regular opportunities with the senior national team. Those chances, however, never materialised.
After reassessing his options, the winger opted to switch allegiance to Ghana, a decision that has now opened the door to his first Black Stars invitation.
With Ghana set to face Mexico later this month, Amuzu will now have the chance to make his mark and begin a new chapter with the country of his birth.
