Renowned lawyer and New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Samuel Atta Akyea has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the GH¢50 million bail conditions granted to NPP communications team member Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing them as “cruel and oppressive.”
Speaking to the media on Monday, July 13, 2026, Atta Akyea questioned the basis for the stringent bail terms, arguing that Aboagye had shown no intention of evading authorities.
He noted that Aboagye had willingly gone through formal immigration procedures at Kotoka International Airport before his arrest, insisting that such conduct did not suggest he was a flight risk.
“Democracy and the rule of law have been reversed. A man who is not running away and is decent enough to go through Kotoka International Airport is arrested and has been detained all this while. I don’t believe that’s how we should conduct our affairs by treating him as if he’s a common criminal,” he said.
Atta Akyea further argued that the bail conditions, which require three sureties, were unrealistic and designed to keep Aboagye in custody.
He questioned how the NPP communicator could secure three qualified sureties with properties valued at GH¢50 million within a short period.
“Where is this gentleman going to get three sureties for a GH¢50 million bail sum? The properties should be worth GH¢50 million. How is he going to do it? You can clearly see that the bail terms are cruel and are a way to punish him,” he added.
He also expressed concern that Aboagye’s detention was approaching the constitutional 48-hour limit, insisting that due process and the rule of law must be respected.
Meanwhile, EOCO has confirmed that Aboagye is under investigation over the alleged misappropriation, misapplication, diversion, and theft of public funds amounting to GH¢55 million.
In a statement issued on July 13, 2026, the anti-graft agency said the investigation relates to his tenure as the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD).
EOCO granted Aboagye bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with three sureties as investigations into the allegations continue.
