The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a night vigil in honour of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his recent imprisonment.
According to a statement issued by the caucus on July 27, 2026, the vigil is scheduled for August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office in Asokwa, just a day before the party’s Ashanti Regional elections.
The organisers said the event is intended to show solidarity with Chairman Wontumi, whose conviction and 20-year prison sentence over illegal mining-related offences have generated widespread reactions within the party.
They also described the vigil as an opportunity to celebrate what they called Wontumi’s “unprecedented and illustrious leadership” during his tenure as Ashanti Regional Chairman.
“The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus announces a night vigil on August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office, Asokwa, on the eve of the Ashanti Regional elections, in honour of Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi),” portions of the statement read.
The caucus further stated that the gathering is expected to send “a clear signal, locally and internationally, that we will not stay silent” over the development.
It has therefore called on constituency executives, party supporters and well-wishers across the Ashanti Region to attend the vigil in a show of unity and support for the embattled regional chairman.
The organisers assured the public that the event would be conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner.
The announcement comes days after an Accra High Court sentenced Chairman Wontumi to 20 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty on six counts related to illegal mining activities linked to Akonta Mining Company Limited’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
Meanwhile, Wontumi’s legal team has begun the appeal process. At the same time, senior NPP figures, including the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, have publicly expressed support for the Ashanti Regional Chairman following his conviction.
