Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has assured contractors and commuters that ongoing work on the current Accra–Kumasi Highway will continue despite government plans to construct a new expressway linking the two major cities.

Speaking during a nationwide road inspection tour in the Eastern Region on May 11, 2026, the minister explained that the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway is intended to work alongside the existing highway rather than replace it.

“The government plans to build a new road known as the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, which is not a substitute for the current Accra-Kumasi Highway. It is meant to complement that route,” he said, according to a report by Citi Newsroom.

Agbodza stated that the expressway is expected to operate commercially through a toll system, offering motorists a faster travel option, while the current highway will remain available for those who prefer a more affordable route.

“For instance, this is an existing road. According to the ECOWAS convention we have signed, we need to construct expressways. However, when expressways are built, an alternative road must also be available since the expressways are intended for commercial use,” he explained.

He added that commuters who choose the expressway and pay the required toll could potentially travel between Accra and Kumasi within two hours, while others may continue using the existing highway even if the journey takes longer.

“So, if someone wants to drive from Accra to Kumasi on the expressway and pay a toll—whether it be $10, $50, or whatever the cost may be—they can reach their destination in two hours. Alternatively, someone may choose to take the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway, which could take five or six hours. That is a choice for the individual,” he said.

The Roads Minister further assured the public that both projects remain priorities for the government and expressed confidence that the ongoing works could be completed by the end of 2027 if implementation stays on schedule.

“In any case, the expressway will also have tolls because it is an investment we are making. Let everyone in the country be assured that both projects are priorities for the government, and we are determined to complete them,” he added.

Agbodza also disclosed that discussions with contractors over project costs and timelines have already been concluded, with some sections expected to be completed ahead of schedule.
