Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin is expected to meet members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Caucus over an allegation of extortion made against him by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 24, 2026, and is expected to allow the Minority Leader to brief his colleagues on the controversy.
The report indicates that the allegation has caused concern among some senior members of the caucus, prompting the planned engagement.
Afenyo-Markin is expected to respond to the claims and explain his position on the issues raised by Gyamfi.
The controversy follows comments by the GoldBod CEO in which he described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” and alleged that there were deeper issues between the two that had not been publicly discussed.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 22, 2026, Gyamfi defended his use of the term, saying his comments were based on matters involving Afenyo-Markin that the public may not be aware of.
“You see, my brother, there are many underlying issues between me and Afenyo-Markin that you don’t know, and those watching don’t know,” he said.
Gyamfi argued that his choice of words was deliberate and questioned why he had not previously described other political critics in similar terms.
“Have you ever heard me use the word extortion against any of my critics? Have you ever heard me? Why would I use this word now?” he asked.
He also pointed out that Afenyo-Markin had not publicly challenged the allegation or threatened legal action over the description.
“So, the NPP people talking; there are things you don’t know,” Gyamfi added.
The planned caucus meeting comes amid growing political exchanges between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO, with attention now focused on Afenyo-Markin’s response to the allegation.
