Two people have lost their lives, while eight others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash at Dompoase near Komenda on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway.
The accident occurred on Friday evening when a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle with registration number AS 6145-24, travelling from Accra to Takoradi, reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle attempting to overtake.
In the process, the driver lost control and crashed into a stationary truck bearing registration number GN 2491-1.
One occupant died instantly at the scene, while another who became trapped in the mangled vehicle was later pronounced dead after rescuers successfully extricated the victim.
The remaining eight passengers suffered varying degrees of injuries, with three reported to be in critical condition. Personnel from the National Ambulance Service transported all the injured victims to the Elmina Polyclinic for medical treatment.
Confirming the incident, the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade II Abdul Wasiu Hudu, said the Komenda Fire Station received a distress call at about 6:55 p.m. and immediately dispatched a rescue team.
According to him, firefighters arrived at the scene around 7:10 p.m., where they found one victim already dead and another trapped inside the wreckage, prompting a rescue operation to recover the body.
The Ghana National Fire Service has urged motorists to strictly observe road safety regulations and exercise greater caution on the roads to help reduce preventable accidents and save lives.
