The government of Ghana spent GH¢68 million to support the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Forson said the funds were provided to assist the national team’s preparations and participation in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“To support Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an amount of GH¢68 million has been paid,” the Finance Minister told Parliament.
Ghana secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup after finishing top of Group I in the African qualifiers, earning a return to football’s biggest stage after failing to progress beyond the group stage at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
The Black Stars entered the competition under Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz and were drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
Despite facing strong opposition, Ghana delivered a disciplined performance and advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
However, the team’s campaign ended in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, bringing their World Cup journey to a close.
The revelation of the government’s financial support comes amid ongoing discussions about public spending on national teams and the role of state funding in supporting Ghana’s sporting ambitions.
