The prime suspect in the 2023 Ablekuma bullion van robbery that claimed the life of police officer Corporal Callistus Amoah has been killed after a police operation that tracked him from Accra to the Upper East Region.

The suspect, identified as Albert Akozua, was reportedly shot dead by police after attempting to escape during his arrest at Kperi Kusanaba Binaba in the Upper East Region.

According to a report by award-winning journalist Saddick Adams, the police traced Akozua through several locations before finally locating him at his hideout in the Upper East Region.

Speaking on his morning show on Angel TV, Saddick Adams narrated that the suspect had moved from Tema and Ashaiman to Kumasi before eventually settling in Kperi Kusanaba Binaba, where police caught up with him.

“From Tema, Ashaiman, Kumasi, he went to Kperi Kusanaba Binaba, and when he heard the police were looking for him, he tried to flee. Thankfully, as he was fleeing, the police stopped his car and asked for his name,” he said.

He explained that the officers already had information about the suspect and confronted him after he allegedly provided a false name.

“They already knew that he was called Albert Akozua; he is a hardened criminal. He was in a hoodie when he was caught and they asked him what his name was and he mentioned a different name and they told him he was lying,” he added.

According to the report, Akozua later admitted his identity and agreed to assist police in retrieving other weapons believed to have been used during the robbery, as well as provide information on other suspects involved in the attack.

However, during the operation, the suspect allegedly attempted to escape, resulting in police shooting him. He was rushed to a nearby health facility but later died from his injuries.

The 28-year-old police officer, General Lance Corporal Callistus Amoah, was killed on June 22, 2023, when armed robbers attacked a bullion van at a Star Oil fuel station at Ablekuma Fanmilk in Accra.

The attackers, who were travelling on two motorbikes, launched a surprise assault on the van and repeatedly shot at the officer seated in the passenger seat.

The robbers escaped with a bag of money after the attack, while the driver of the bullion van reportedly fled the scene.

The incident shocked the country after CCTV footage showed the armed men firing multiple times at the officer before escaping.

The police have since been pursuing suspects linked to the robbery as investigations continue into the deadly attack.
