Former Ghana international Prince Tagoe has criticised plans to retain Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, describing the move as one that would not benefit the national team.
The Portuguese coach was handed a short-term contract after Otto Addo was dismissed before the 2026 FIFA World Cup and guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time since 2010.
However, Ghana’s campaign ended at the Round of 32 stage after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Following the World Cup exit, Queiroz appeared to indicate that he would be leaving his position, but President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to persuade the 73-year-old coach to continue in the role.
During an inspection of the Ho Sports Stadium, President Mahama praised the Black Stars’ performance at the tournament, describing the team’s showing as beyond expectations and suggesting that maintaining continuity could be beneficial.
Tagoe, however, disagrees with that approach, arguing that Queiroz’s tactical style does not reflect the traditional identity of Ghanaian football.
“Keeping coach Carlos Queiroz is a waste of time. I am not okay with his tactics. Ghana football is not about defending,” Tagoe told Adom TV.
“I don’t think he will take us far,” the former Hearts of Oak striker added.
The ex-Black Stars player, who featured at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, believes Ghana needs a coach whose philosophy is built around attacking football and suits the country’s football culture.
As Ghana moves beyond the World Cup, focus has now turned to preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars have been placed in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia as they begin their attempt to return to Africa’s biggest football competition after missing the 2025 edition.
