Several commercial drivers and their conductors have been arrested by the National Security Monitoring and Evaluation Team over alleged unauthorised transport fare increases along the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Kasoa route.
The operation followed complaints from commuters who accused some transport operators of charging up to GH₵20 for the journey despite no official announcement approving new fares.
The sudden increase reportedly triggered anger among passengers, with many questioning the basis for the charges.
In a viral video circulating on X on Friday, May 15, 2026, members of the monitoring team were seen moving through transport terminals as they apprehended some drivers and mates linked to the alleged fare hikes.
The situation reportedly created tension at several lorry stations, where passengers and transport operators engaged in heated exchanges over the disputed fares.
Some commuters were also said to have been stranded after certain drivers allegedly refused to pick up passengers unwilling to pay the increased amount.
Authorities say the exercise is part of wider efforts to prevent unlawful fare adjustments and shield commuters from exploitation by commercial transport operators.
In Ghana, transport fares are typically reviewed through consultations involving transport unions and government authorities, with approved increases publicly announced before implementation.
