The Minority in Parliament has raised an alarm over a 14-month delay in the payment of salaries to approximately 14,000 nurses across the country.
The issue was brought to the floor of Parliament, primarily by the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor. Mr. Jinapor states that over 14,000 newly recruited and existing nurses have not received their salaries for over a year, which they argue severely undermines the effectiveness of the public healthcare system.
He argues that Nurses, including the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association (RETAG), have recently held demonstrations demanding the settlement of these arrears.
According to Mr. Jinapor the delay comes amidst reports of a shortage of health professionals and roughly 10,000 qualified nurses still waiting for official postings due to budget constraints.
While these delays are contested, the government recently reached an agreement with Organized Labour for a 9% base pay increase for all public sector workers starting January 1, 2026.
