Operatives of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) have successfully intercepted a shipment of cocaine that was concealed in packages of gari — a staple Ghanaian food product — as it was being moved through Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra.

According to authorities, the suspected narcotics were hidden inside a consignment of packaged gari (dried cassava flakes) that was destined for export. The discovery was made during an intelligence-led operation conducted by NACOC officers at the airport’s cargo handling area.

A senior manager at a manufacturing company — believed to be responsible for the gari production — has been arrested in connection with the case. His name has not been publicly released by officials.

NACOC sources say the suspect is in charge of production at the company whose products were involved in the shipment. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether other individuals or a larger network may be connected to the alleged smuggling attempt.

Airport and narcotics officials have not yet disclosed the total quantity of cocaine found in the hidden compartment, nor the ultimate destination of the shipment. However, they emphasised that the seizure highlights the continued risk of drug trafficking attempts using legitimate goods as cover.

The incident comes amid heightened efforts by Ghanaian law enforcement agencies to crack down on narcotics trafficking at major points of entry and transit, particularly at KIA, which is a key hub for both cargo and passenger flights.
