The newly inaugurated leadership of the All‑African Students Union (AASU) has pledged to deepen the involvement of African students in shaping policies that affect their education and welfare across the continent.

Addressing the media after the swearing‑in ceremony of the Union’s new executives, Secretary‑General Divine Edem Kwadzodeh emphasised that African students have historically been sidelined in major decision‑making processes, particularly in the formulation of education policies and programmes.

Kwadzodeh, who serves as the chief administrative officer of AASU, stated that the administration’s top priority is to ensure that students are placed at the centre of policy discussions at national and continental levels.

“Nothing for African students should ever be done without their input,” he said, underscoring that meaningful student participation is critical to developing policies that genuinely reflect the interests and needs of students themselves.

He also noted that many education policies, programmes and projects have historically been implemented without adequate consultation with students, despite them being the primary beneficiaries. The new leadership, he assured, will work diligently to bridge this gap and strengthen student representation in all forums where decisions on education and youth development are made.

The All‑African Students Union, established as a continental platform representing national student unions across Africa’s 54 countries, plays a key role in uniting student voices and advocating for improved access to quality education, student welfare, and inclusive policy engagement.
