Five Historic Forts Closed Temporarily for Maintenance

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has announced the temporary closure of five historic forts nationwide to undertake essential maintenance and conservation works.

In a statement released on Friday, December 19, 2025, the Board said the affected sites are Fort Apollonia in Beyin, Fort St. Anthony in Axim, Fort Orange in Sekondi, James Fort in Jamestown, and Ussher Fort in Usshertown. The closures took effect on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

According to the GMMB, the move is intended to allow for critical repairs, safety inspections, and conservation activities aimed at safeguarding the structural integrity and historical value of the forts.

The Board apologised to the public, stakeholders, and visitors for any inconvenience the temporary closures may cause and appealed for patience and understanding as efforts are made to preserve the heritage sites for future generations.

It further assured the public that updates regarding the reopening of the forts would be communicated in due course.
