The Ministry of the Interior has set a six-week deadline for owners of unregistered firearms to voluntarily surrender their weapons, warning that failure to comply will attract strict penalties.

The nationwide Gun Amnesty Initiative will run from 1 December 2025 to 15 January 2026 and forms part of a broader strategy to reduce gun violence, curb the spread of illegal arms, and address the rising number of gun-related incidents across the country.

During this period, citizens can hand over unregistered or illegally held firearms without fear of prosecution, providing a safe opportunity to comply with the law.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak cautioned that anyone found with illicit firearms after the deadline would face stringent sanctions. He emphasized that the initiative is vital for ensuring the safety and security of all Ghanaians.

The Minister also announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities within the amnesty period, aimed at preventing celebratory gunfire, reducing injuries, and saving lives in communities nationwide.
