Edem Senanu, Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption (CMaC), has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his firm commitment to ensuring the swift prosecution of public officials implicated in the misuse or mismanagement of state funds.
President Mahama recently expressed deep concern over the persistent financial irregularities highlighted in the Auditor-General’s report. In response, he announced plans to collaborate with the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Minister for Justice, and other relevant authorities to accelerate the legal processes surrounding such cases.
Reacting to the announcement, Mr. Senanu described the initiative as a much-needed and practical move toward reinforcing accountability and safeguarding public resources.
“I think it is highly commendable. Many of us have long felt that the cycle of the Public Accounts Committee identifying infractions year after year—without real action to recover funds or prosecute culprits—undermines good governance,” he said.
Mr. Senanu also criticised the entrenched culture of impunity in the public sector, pointing out that repeated audit findings without consequences have eroded public confidence in state institutions.
“All of this feeds into impunity. So the President’s decision to take this matter seriously is highly commendable,” he added.
The initiative is being seen by anti-corruption advocates as a critical step toward restoring transparency and accountability in public financial management.
