Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a close aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Mr. Aboagye criticized the current administration for what he described as worsening illegal mining activities under President Mahama’s nine-month-old government.

“We’ve seen an escalation in galamsey over the past nine months. The government must stop making excuses and asking for more time. The country doesn’t have time — the situation is critical,” he stated.

He emphasized that while not every promise made in opposition can yield immediate results, Ghanaians expect to see genuine efforts.

“You made specific promises to Ghanaians. Even if they don’t all work out immediately, people will acknowledge that you tried. But when there’s little to no action on those commitments, people will naturally raise concerns,” he added.

Mr. Aboagye’s comments come amid renewed national debate over the government’s commitment to ending illegal mining, which continues to devastate forests, farmlands, and water bodies across the country.
