Supreme Court Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei has dismissed claims that politicians interfere in judicial decisions, insisting that no politician has ever attempted to influence him over any case he has handled.
Speaking on GHOne on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Justice Adjei said that throughout his 16 years on the bench, including his time at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, he has never received a call from any politician regarding a case before him.
“I’ve been on the bench for 16 years and three days at the Supreme Court. No politician has ever called me in respect of a matter before me. Even at the Court of Appeal, I determined several important cases, including ‘Let My Vote Count’, but nobody has ever called me,” he said.
He added that his experience leads him to believe that many of his colleagues are equally free from political interference.
Justice Adjei also rejected the notion that judges become loyal to the government because they are appointed by the President.
According to him, judicial appointments do not make judges agents of any political party, stressing that judges are bound by their oath of office to administer justice fairly and independently.
“It is the duty of the President to appoint whenever there are vacancies. The fact that you are appointing does not mean that the person is becoming an appendage to your party,” he stated.
The Supreme Court judge said judicial officers are expected to decide cases solely based on the law and not political considerations.
He argued that any judge who allows a politician to influence a ruling would have abandoned their constitutional responsibility.
Justice Adjei also addressed public criticism of court decisions, saying allegations of political bias often emerge only when one side loses a case.
He maintained that such claims are unfair and do not reflect the independence with which judges perform their duties.
“If people think that because you appointed me to the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court, you can manipulate me, it is not so. Nobody has ever approached me. Subconsciously, I know that I must do what is right in accordance with the law,” he said.
