Concerns have been raised over the treatment of the Gambia national team ahead of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium.
A Gambian journalist took to social media to question the arrangements made for the visiting team, alleging that the delegation was not given a police escort after arriving in Ghana.
The journalist claimed the situation continued when the team travelled from its hotel to the stadium for its final training session ahead of the Group C encounter.
According to the post, the Gambian team also allegedly faced difficulties upon arriving at the Accra Sports Stadium, where the delegation was reportedly denied access to a dressing room and had to change on the pitch.
A video accompanying the claims showed the Gambian team arriving at the stadium for training, with one of the officials heard expressing frustration over the absence of a police escort.
“When we were coming, we didn’t have an escort. This is very bad,” the official said in the video.
The Gambian journalist subsequently called on the Ghana Football Association and other relevant authorities to investigate the claims and explain the arrangements made for the visiting team.
The journalist argued that both Ghana and The Gambia should be afforded equal treatment, adequate security and professional arrangements during the qualifiers.
“If you want to win, win with dignity,” the journalist wrote.
The allegations come ahead of an important Group C clash between the two sides.
Ghana are looking to secure their first points of the qualifying campaign after losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening match in Bouaké.
The Gambia, meanwhile, began their campaign on a positive note with a 2-1 victory over Somalia.
The latest concerns have added another talking point ahead of Tuesday’s encounter in Accra, although the allegations about the team’s treatment have not been independently verified based on the information available.
