The Central Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation has called for urgent humanitarian assistance following tidal waves that struck the coastal fishing community of Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District for three consecutive days.

According to NADMO, the disaster has displaced several residents and caused extensive destruction to homes and property within the community.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Monday, May 18, 2026, Central Regional NADMO Director Kwesi Dawood said affected families urgently require relief items and temporary support after losing their homes to the tidal waves.

He also stressed the need for the construction of a permanent sea defence wall to protect the area from future disasters.

“We need immediate relief support and a permanent sea defence wall, which will greatly help prevent the devastation we have witnessed over the past three days,” he stated.

Dawood described the incident as a climate-induced disaster that requires coordinated intervention from government, development partners, and other stakeholders.

“What occurred in Moree is a tidal wave-induced disaster that requires a comprehensive advocacy and action plan. Moree needs immediate humanitarian assistance as well as long-term engineering and policy solutions, such as addressing the impact of the stalled sea defence project and implementing other climate interventions to prevent future occurrences,” he added.
