President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Explorco, the exploration subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), will begin onshore drilling in the Voltaian Basin before the end of 2026.

The President announced while cutting the sod for Phase Two of the Sentuo Oil Refinery Project in Tema.

According to him, the drilling programme is intended to assess the commercial viability of petroleum deposits in the Voltaian Basin, which has been identified as having significant hydrocarbon potential.

Mahama said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to expand Ghana’s oil and gas resource base beyond the country’s existing offshore fields.

He also highlighted the importance of the Sentuo Oil Refinery expansion, noting that Phase Two of the project will increase the refinery’s processing capacity from 40,000 barrels per day to 100,000 barrels per day.

The President said the expansion is expected to strengthen Ghana’s petroleum refining capacity, reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products, and support the country’s long-term energy security and industrial growth.
