The Government of Ghana has confirmed the death of a Ghanaian national who was killed during xenophobic attacks that erupted amid anti-immigration protests in South Africa.

In a statement issued on July 1, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs identified the deceased as 40-year-old Bashiru Isak, who was fatally shot in Khayelitsha, a community in Cape Town, during demonstrations linked to ongoing anti-immigrant violence.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received with profound shock and sadness reports of the fatal shooting of a Ghanaian national, Mr Bashiru Isak, aged 40 years, in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa, on Monday, June 30, 2026, during anti-immigrant demonstrations linked to ongoing xenophobic attacks,” portions of the statement read.

The ministry strongly condemned the attacks against foreign nationals, describing them as “senseless acts of violence,” and called on South African authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

According to the statement, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, acting on the instructions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has formally lodged a protest with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and filed an official complaint with the South African Police Service.

The ministry said these actions were taken after confirming the identity of the deceased and notifying his family.

It further disclosed that, at the request of the Government of Ghana, an autopsy has been conducted on the victim’s body.

“Ghana demands from the South African authorities a full, transparent and expedited investigation leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. We also reiterate our call on the South African authorities to ensure enhanced protection for all Ghanaian nationals in affected communities,” the statement added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of the government’s support during this difficult period.

It also announced that arrangements are underway to repatriate the mortal remains of Bashiru Isak to Ghana for burial.

The confirmation comes amid heightened tensions in South Africa following recent anti-immigration protests that turned violent in several parts of the country, prompting renewed concerns over the safety of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians living there.
