The Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the violent attack on two teachers at Bawku Senior High School and warned that all individuals responsible will face both legal action and disciplinary sanctions.

The incident occurred on June 16, 2026, during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), after some students reportedly reacted violently to the strict enforcement of examination regulations.

The unrest left two teachers injured and destroyed school property.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, and signed by Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, GES described the attack as unacceptable and contrary to the values of discipline, respect and integrity that educational institutions seek to instill in students.

According to the Service, preliminary findings suggest that the disturbances were triggered by invigilators enforcing examination rules during the WASSCE.

GES stressed that attacks on teachers carrying out their official responsibilities represent a serious breach of school discipline and undermine the safety of education professionals.

“The attack on teachers performing their legitimate duties is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the statement indicated.

To restore calm, security personnel have been deployed to the school to maintain order and ensure the smooth continuation of teaching, learning and examination activities.

GES also confirmed that the two injured teachers are receiving medical treatment and the necessary support.

The Service disclosed that it is working closely with security agencies to investigate the incident and identify all students and other individuals involved in the violence.

It warned that anyone found culpable would face the full consequences of their actions.

“Anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law, in addition to disciplinary measures under GES regulations,” the statement emphasized.

GES further reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe and conducive environment for both teachers and students across the country.

The Service also called on parents, guardians, school authorities and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at promoting discipline, respect for authority and adherence to examination regulations in schools.

The incident comes as thousands of final-year students across Ghana continue to sit for the 2026 WASSCE, a crucial examination that determines admission into tertiary institutions and future academic opportunities.
