At least 11 school children were injured after a tipper truck crashed into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus transporting pupils along the Dzorwulu to Accra Mall stretch on Thursday.
The children were reportedly returning from a school excursion when the tipper truck rammed into the rear of the bus, leaving several of them injured.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the pupils is receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Police Hospital, while the remaining 10 children have been admitted to the 37 Military Hospital for medical care.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the incident, stating that about 11 lower primary school pupils were on board the bus at the time of the crash.
Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said firefighters from the National Headquarters Rescue Team were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist with rescue operations.
“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children,” he said.
He added that preliminary information indicated the pupils were returning from an educational excursion when the collision occurred.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was carrying schoolchildren. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he stated.
Rescue personnel worked to separate the two heavily damaged vehicles and ensure the injured victims received prompt medical attention.
Images from the scene showed the bus with extensive rear-end damage, blood stains inside the vehicle and a child’s school bag among the debris, highlighting the severity of the collision.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the accident, and investigations are ongoing.
Officials have also not confirmed whether there were any fatalities, while the conditions of the injured children continue to be monitored by medical personnel.
