Basic school pupils across Ghana will have to return to the classroom on November 5 and 6 after the Ghana Education Service (GES) cancelled the two-day mid-term break originally scheduled for those dates.
In a public notice, GES Management directed all basic schools to remain open and conduct normal academic activities on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, 2026.
The Service explained that the decision was taken to recover instructional hours lost during the recent industrial action, which disrupted teaching and learning in schools.
“Therefore, all basic schools are expected to open and conduct normal academic activities on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, 2026,” the notice stated.
The cancellation means teachers and pupils will be required to report to school as usual instead of observing the planned mid-term break.
GES has urged teachers, students, parents and guardians to take note of the revised arrangement and make the necessary preparations ahead of the two affected dates.
The Service also appealed to the public to cooperate with the directive, emphasising the importance of restoring lost teaching time and maintaining the quality of education.
The November 5 and 6 break had initially been scheduled as a two-day pause in the academic calendar. However, following the latest announcement, basic schools will now use the period for regular classroom activities as efforts continue to make up for time lost during the industrial action.
