Leading member of the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, says he would deploy the Ghana Armed Forces to take decisive action against illegal mining if he were elected president.
According to him, the destruction of the country’s water bodies and forest reserves by illegal mining activities requires a tougher response than what is currently being implemented.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Adorye said protecting Ghana’s natural resources should be a national priority.
“One day, if I become president of this country… water bodies, reserves [must be protected], charge your armed forces to take helicopter, fly over the forest, start spraying inside,” he said.
He argued that Ghana cannot continue to allow illegal mining to destroy the environment unchecked.
“We need to protect our own selves. We should not allow some of these things to happen,” he stated.
Adorye further noted that pollution from illegal mining poses a serious threat to communities, water sources, and the environment, insisting that stronger enforcement measures are needed to curb the menace.
His comments come amid renewed national debate over the fight against galamsey and growing calls for stricter action to protect Ghana’s rivers and forest reserves.
