Political analyst Samuel Boateng has called on President John Dramani Mahama to go beyond the recent ministerial reshuffle and remove government appointees he believes have failed to meet expectations.
Boateng said some ministers should not simply be transferred to different positions, arguing that officials who have performed poorly should be relieved of their duties altogether.
His comments follow a government reshuffle announced in an official statement on August 7, 2026, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
The nominations were submitted to Parliament through the Speaker for vetting and approval in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Under the proposed changes, Korle Klottey MP Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings has been nominated to head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, while Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has been nominated to lead the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Two serving ministers are also being reassigned. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been nominated as Minister for Defence, while Banda MP Ahmed Ibrahim is being moved to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
Boateng, however, described the changes as insufficient, saying the reshuffle does not go far enough to address concerns over the performance of some ministers.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong, he specifically mentioned Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak as ministers he believes should be removed from government.
“We expect President John Dramani Mahama to make significant changes to his government. Some ministers should be reassigned to positions where they can perform better. Others are politically handicapped and need to be moved. However, there are some who have performed poorly and should be dismissed without any reassignment. There are also those who have made serious mistakes and must be shown the exit,” Boateng said.
He argued that the Health Minister, in particular, should be relieved of his position, claiming that he had struggled to cope with the demands of the ministry.
“Off the top of my head, I believe the Health Minister should be relieved of his position. He has failed and appears overwhelmed by the demands of the office. In my view, he would have performed better as a Deputy Health Minister,” he stated.
When asked whether he believed the Interior Minister should also be removed, Boateng answered in the affirmative.
He maintained that Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak had similarly failed to perform effectively in his current role, reinforcing his call for President Mahama to make bigger changes to the government rather than limiting the reshuffle to reassignments.
