The summer transfer window is officially closed, bringing an end to months of huge spending, blockbuster moves and ambitious squad rebuilding across Europe.
Clubs in the continent’s top five leagues spent more than £6.4 billion, with 1,421 transfers completed during the window.
Some deals, however, stood out from the rest because of their size, the reputation of the players involved and the potential impact they could have on their new clubs.
Here are the 10 biggest and most significant transfers of the 2026/27 season.
1. Enzo Fernández – Chelsea to Manchester City (£125m)
Manchester City produced one of the biggest shocks of the transfer window by signing Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for £125 million.
The deal, completed on deadline day, matched the British transfer record and saw the 25-year-old sign a five-year contract with City.
Fernández will reunite with manager Enzo Maresca and, remarkably, becomes the first player to have been transferred for more than £100 million on two separate occasions.
Chelsea had paid £106.8 million to sign him from Benfica in 2023.
2. Morgan Rogers – Aston Villa to Chelsea (£117m)
Chelsea continued their remarkable spending spree by signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder signed a seven-year contract after an impressive spell at Villa.
The transfer is particularly notable because Aston Villa qualified for the Champions League while Chelsea did not.
3. Elliot Anderson – Nottingham Forest to Manchester City (£116m)
Before Fernández arrived, Elliot Anderson had been Manchester City’s record signing of the window.
City paid £116 million for the 23-year-old midfielder after his rapid rise at Nottingham Forest.
The England international is viewed as a key part of City’s midfield rebuild and has been tipped as a potential long-term successor to Rodri.
Remarkably, the agreement was reached while Anderson was representing England at the World Cup.
4. Yan Diomande – RB Leipzig to Real Madrid (£120m)
Real Madrid won the race for one of Europe’s most highly rated young attackers by signing Ivorian winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.
The 19-year-old moved for an initial £106.8 million, with the overall package potentially rising to £120 million.
He has signed a seven-year contract and arrives in Madrid with enormous expectations.
For African football, the transfer is particularly significant, making Diomande one of the most expensive African players in football history.
5. Bradley Barcola – PSG to Liverpool (£123m)
Liverpool eventually secured the signing of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola after a lengthy pursuit.
The initial fee is reportedly £106 million, with add-ons potentially taking the total package to £123 million.
The France international is expected to play a major role in reshaping Liverpool’s attack and adding more pace and creativity to the forward line.
6. Sandro Tonali – Newcastle United to Tottenham (£92.5m)
Tottenham made one of the biggest midfield moves of the window by signing Italian international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
The initial fee is £92.5 million and could rise to £100 million through performance-related bonuses.

7. Mateus Fernandes – West Ham to Tottenham (£85m)

Rodri’s transfer to Barcelona may rank lower in terms of fee, but its significance makes it one of the biggest stories of the window.
The Ballon d’Or winner and Spain captain left Manchester City for Barcelona in a deal worth around £65 million.
His departure represents a major change for City, while Barcelona have secured one of the world’s leading midfielders.
