A 22-year-old motor mechanic who also worked as a Bolt driver has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for robbing a beautician and attacking her with a cutlass at Adenta.
Emmanuel Kofi Mensah was convicted by the Adenta Circuit Court after pleading guilty to robbery.
The court, presided over by Mrs Angela Attachie, sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment in hard labour.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, told the court that Mensah robbed the complainant, Yvonne Dzane Dzifa, of two iPhones valued at GH¢18,000 and GH¢3,500, GH¢3,200 in cash and other personal belongings.
The incident occurred at Mantey Farms, along the Adenta-Dodowa road, on September 23, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m.
According to the prosecution, Dzifa, who lives at Adenta New Site, booked Mensah’s Bolt vehicle from Madina Zongo Junction to Adenta.
When they reached Adenta Barrier, she asked to get out of the vehicle. Mensah allegedly refused to stop, locked the doors and continued driving towards the Adenta-Dodowa road.
The prosecution said Dzifa became suspicious and started shouting for help, but nobody responded.
Mensah eventually drove to Mantey Farms, where he stopped the vehicle and allegedly demanded that Dzifa hand over her handbag and other belongings.
When she refused, Mensah reportedly pulled out a cutlass and threatened her.
The court heard that he dragged Dzifa out of the vehicle and onto the ground before repeatedly striking her with the cutlass as he attempted to take her bag.
She continued to resist and held tightly onto the bag during the struggle.
The prosecution said Mensah eventually slashed her left wrist and little finger, enabling him to take the bag.
Inside were an iPhone 17 Pro Max valued at GH¢18,000, an iPhone 12 valued at GH¢3,500, GH¢3,200 in cash and other personal effects.
Mensah allegedly then contacted an accomplice, who is still at large. The accomplice reportedly arrived at the scene on a motorbike.
Dzifa managed to grab a backpack from the front seat of the vehicle and escaped into a nearby bush.
Mensah and his accomplice allegedly pursued her with the cutlass but failed to retrieve the backpack.
The prosecution said Dzifa eventually climbed over the fence wall of a nearby house and sought refuge in the compound until the following morning.
The landlord subsequently informed the Police, who went to the house and rescued her.
A search of the backpack revealed a tablet and a mini-laptop believed to be stolen property.
Dzifa, who had suffered a deep cutlass wound to her left wrist and little finger, as well as bruises across her body, reported the matter to the Police.
She was issued a medical report form and sent to the Pantang Government Hospital, where she received treatment and was discharged.
Mensah was arrested the following day after allegedly attempting to sell the stolen iPhone 17 Pro Max.
At about 1:00 p.m. on September 24, he reportedly took the phone to an Apple shop at Madina Zongo Junction.
The shop owner allegedly noticed Dzifa’s picture on the phone and suspected that it had been stolen. He subsequently caused Mensah’s arrest and handed him over to the Police.
A search of Mensah revealed the cutlass allegedly used during the robbery, which was concealed in his shorts.
The prosecution said Mensah admitted the offence in his caution statement and pleaded for forgiveness.
Mensah also reportedly told the Police that the Bolt vehicle belonged to a Nigerian friend but failed to provide details that could lead to the friend’s identification.
The prosecution said investigations were continuing to identify and arrest the accomplice and any other person linked to the robbery.
