A dispute over traditional protocol has prompted the Omanhene of the Agona Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, to ban Afigya Sekyere East MP Mavis Nkansah-Boadu from organising social events within his traditional jurisdiction.
The decision follows a disagreement over an invitation the MP sent to the traditional ruler to attend the grand finale of the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament, scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Agona Community AstroTurf.
In a letter addressed to the MP and titled “Disrespectful Conduct,” the Omanhene accused her of failing to accord him the recognition and respect he believes his position demands.
He took particular issue with the way the invitation was addressed, saying the description “The Chief, Agona Traditional Council” failed to acknowledge his status as the Omanhene of the Agona Traditional Area.
Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II said he had completed the customary rites and ceremonies associated with his position, including swearing an oath before Agona Amantuonson on June 4, 2026, and later before Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on June 29.
He also cited other traditional events marking his installation and recognition. These included sitting in state on July 2 and 3, offering his Aseda to the Asantehene on July 27, and celebrating his maiden Akwasidae and Big Akwasidae on July 19 and August 30, respectively.
The Omanhene further noted that several public officials, including the Sekyere South Municipal Police Commander, the Municipal Director of Education and Municipal Chief Executive Evans Twumasi, had participated in his traditional programmes and paid homage to his authority.
Against that background, he expressed disappointment that Nkansah-Boadu had allegedly failed to show him similar recognition despite her periodic visits to Agona.
“You, the Hon. Mavis Nkansah Boadu, is yet to show respect and reverence to me as the Omanhene of Agona Traditional Council Area, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II (and by extension the Otumfuo Asantehene) during your periodic visits to Agona Township,” portions of the letter stated.
Omanhene announces immediate ban
The traditional ruler described the invitation as a major affront to his authority, questioning why the MP would invite him to an event under her patronage without what he considered proper recognition of his traditional status.
“I saw your invitation in question as attached, a huge surprise and an insult of the highest order,” he wrote.
He subsequently announced an immediate ban on social events organised by the MP within his traditional jurisdiction, specifically mentioning the upcoming inter-school football tournament.
“You are banned with immediate effect from holding any social event (particularly the Tournament in question scheduled for 23rd October, 2026) within my Traditional jurisdiction,” the letter stated.
The affected communities are Agona, Bipoa, Wiamoase, Bedomase, Afamanaso, Akrofonso and Amponyinamoa.
Emphasising his determination to protect his traditional office’s authority, the Omanhene declared: “I will not allow any misconduct to undermine my authority and for that matter, Asanteman.”
Dispute centres on tournament invitation
The controversy stems from an invitation dated October 8, 2026, in which Nkansah-Boadu invited the traditional ruler to the final of the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament.
What was intended as an invitation to a sporting event has now developed into a dispute over customary protocol and the recognition owed to traditional leadership.
The ban also raises questions about the planned tournament, scheduled for October 23 at the Agona Community AstroTurf.
The letter sets out the Omanhene’s position and the reasons he gave for his decision. The account provided does not include a response from the MP to the allegations of disrespect or the announced ban.
