Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has criticised the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for distributing baked beans and noodles to victims of the recent floods, saying the affected residents need more substantial relief support.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on July 7, 2026, Afenyo-Markin argued that although the government had reportedly released funds for flood relief, the items being distributed were inadequate.

“We have been told that some funds have been released to NADMO. Only yesterday, Mr Speaker, we saw NADMO at Nima and Accra New Town sharing baked beans and Indomie. Baked beans, baked beans,” he said.

According to the Minority Leader, flood victims who have lost their homes, businesses and belongings require essential food items and assistance to rebuild their lives.

He said staples such as rice, maize and cooking oil, along with government support to help restore livelihoods, would be more appropriate.

“When people have lost properties, they need rice, they need maize, they need cooking oil. They need government to intervene to restore their businesses,” he stressed.

Afenyo-Markin also questioned the procurement process for the relief items, raising concerns about how the baked beans distributed to victims were acquired.

He further called on the government to provide additional relief materials, including blankets and mattresses, to support displaced residents.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka told Parliament’s Public Assurance Committee that recent flooding across the Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions claimed 29 lives, with six people still missing.

He disclosed that the Central Region recorded one of the deadliest incidents, where flooding a week before the June 29 Accra floods claimed 18 lives and destroyed dozens of homes.
