Government imposes curfew on Hamile

Residents of Hamile Township and surrounding communities in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region are facing movement restrictions following the government’s decision to impose an overnight curfew in the area.

The Ministry for the Interior announced that the curfew took immediate effect on the advice of the National Security Council and through an Executive Instrument.

Under the directive, movement is prohibited daily between 6:00 pm and 5:00 am, meaning residents will have to observe an 11-hour restriction each night.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the government appealed to traditional authorities, opinion leaders, the youth and other residents to remain calm and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

“Government urges Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their grievances into ensuring peace in the area,” the statement said.

The government has also introduced additional security restrictions, including a complete ban on the possession of firearms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within Hamile and its surrounding communities.

The Interior Ministry warned that anyone found carrying such items would face arrest and prosecution.

“Meanwhile, there is a total ban on all persons in Hamile Township and its environs in Lambussie District of the Upper West from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons,” the statement noted.

It further cautioned that “any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted”.

The measures are intended to address security concerns in the area, with the government urging residents and community leaders to pursue peaceful approaches to resolving their grievances.
