Former Nigeria international Peter Osaze Odemwingie has named Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time, placing the former Chelsea midfielder ahead of several celebrated figures in the country’s football history.

Odemwingie made the declaration during a TikTok live session after Bryt FM asked him to identify the greatest player Ghana has ever produced.

Although he acknowledged the achievements of legends such as Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan and the Ayew brothers, the former Stoke City forward ultimately settled on Essien.

He explained that the former Black Stars midfielder stood out because of his ability to combine defensive duties with an impressive attacking contribution.

“Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, they were all great players. The Ayew brothers, of course, and Asamoah Gyan as well. But I would give it to Essien because he was a defensive midfielder who could also score goals. So, I would choose him,” Odemwingie said.

Essien enjoyed a distinguished career at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

His time at Chelsea was particularly successful, as he won several major trophies, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Known for his physical strength, tireless work rate, tactical awareness and ability to influence matches in both defence and attack, Essien became one of Ghana’s most respected football exports.

His performances at club level also established him as a key figure for the Black Stars, where he represented Ghana in major international competitions.

Since retiring from professional football, Essien has moved into coaching. He currently works as an assistant coach at Danish club FC Nordsjælland.

Odemwingie’s selection adds to the recognition Essien continues to receive from former players outside Ghana, particularly those who witnessed his performances during the competitive football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria.

While Abedi Pele and Yeboah remain among the country’s most celebrated football icons, other players, including Muntari, Gyan and the Ayew brothers, have also made significant contributions to the Black Stars over the years.

For Odemwingie, however, Essien’s rare combination of defensive discipline and goal-scoring ability makes him his choice as Ghana’s greatest footballer of all time.
