An invitation intended to bring traditional leadership and young footballers together has triggered a dispute between Agonamanhene Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II and Afigya Sekyere East MP Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, with the traditional ruler banning the legislator from organising social events within his jurisdiction.
The disagreement centres on a letter dated October 8, 2026, in which the MP invited the Agonamanhene to the grand finale of the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament, scheduled for Friday, October 23, at the Agona Community AstroTurf.
The tournament was presented in the invitation as a youth empowerment initiative aimed at identifying emerging football talents, encouraging healthy competition and promoting unity among senior high schools in the Sekyere South Municipality.
However, the traditional ruler took issue with how the invitation addressed him, arguing that the wording failed to recognise his traditional title and position.
In a response dated October 21, 2026, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II expressed displeasure that the MP had referred to him as “The Chief, Agona Traditional Council” rather than acknowledging him as the Omanhene.
Why the invitation caused offence
The Agonamanhene said he had completed several traditional rites and ceremonies since his enstoolment, which he believes established his position and authority.
He cited his swearing-in before the Agona Amantuo Nson on June 4, 2026, followed by another ceremony before Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on June 29.
He also referred to sitting in state on July 2 and 3, offering his Aseda to the Asantehene on July 27, and celebrating his maiden Akwasidae on July 19 and Big Akwasidae on August 30.
According to the traditional ruler, several public officials and dignitaries had attended some of these programmes and paid homage to his authority.
Those he mentioned included the Sekyere South Municipal Police Commander, the Municipal Director of Education and Municipal Chief Executive Evans Twumasi, who he said had attended personally or sent representatives.
Against this background, the Agonamanhene questioned why the MP had not shown what he considered the appropriate respect during her visits to Agona.
He described the invitation as a “huge surprise and an insult of the highest order”, expressing disbelief at the manner in which his position had been acknowledged.
Football tournament affected by the ban
Following the disagreement, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II issued a directive prohibiting Nkansah-Boadu from organising any social event within his traditional jurisdiction.
The restriction includes the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament, whose grand finale was scheduled for October 23.
The ban covers Agona, Bipoa, Wiamoase, Bedomase, Afamanaso, Akrofonso and Amponyinamoa.
In his letter, the traditional ruler warned the MP against defying the directive and instructed the relevant municipal authorities to ensure its enforcement until further notice.
“The following are my consequential orders,” he wrote before outlining the restrictions.
He further declared that he would not permit any conduct he considered an affront to his authority or that of Asanteman.
The dispute has placed the planned school football finale in the middle of a disagreement over traditional protocol and recognition. The invitation’s wording, rather than the stated purpose of the tournament, has become the central issue in the exchange between the MP and the Agonamanhene.
The available account does not include a response from Nkansah-Boadu to the ban or her explanation for the wording used in the invitation.
