Five suspects have been arrested while another was shot dead as the Ghana Police Service intensified operations against an alleged gold robbery network targeting gold shops, mining sites and communities.
The intelligence-led operations, carried out between August and September 12, resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 assault rifles, 357 rounds of ammunition and five magazines.
Police also seized two locally manufactured pistols, five BB cartridges, two vehicles, cutlasses and a metal bar during the raids.
Addressing a news conference, the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said one of the suspects was killed after engaging officers in a gunfight during the operations.
The police chief further disclosed that some members of the group are allegedly linked to previous violent robberies at Akokoamong, near Offinso.
The suspects are also said to have connections to the robbery of a gold buyer at Offinso Abofour in July 2025. They were reportedly arrested in connection with that case and are currently standing trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court.
The latest operations form part of efforts by the police to disrupt armed robbery networks operating in mining communities, where gold traders, miners and residents have increasingly faced security threats.
Following the arrests and recovery of the weapons, specialist police units have been deployed to affected mining areas to strengthen security.
The deployment is intended to deter further attacks and create a safer environment for residents, miners and businesses to carry out their daily activities.
The police have also urged residents in the affected communities to cooperate with security agencies by providing information that could help identify and dismantle criminal networks operating in the areas.
