Ranking Member on Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee and Gushegu MP Hassan Tampuli has accused the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi of causing what he described as a GH¢22 billion financial loss to the country.
According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker, the scale of the alleged loss translates into a financial burden of about GH¢700 for every Ghanaian.
“Sammy Gyamfi, the Bank of Ghana, and GoldBod have caused us a financial loss of GH¢22 billion,” Tampuli said.
He argued that dividing the alleged GH¢22 billion loss among Ghana’s estimated population of 32 million people amounts to roughly GH¢700 per person.
“If you divide this loss by 32 million Ghanaians, it means every Ghanaian will owe GH¢700 just because of the GH¢22 billion. Whether you are a child, teenager, adult, or aged, Sammy Gyamfi has imposed a GH¢700 debt on you without you committing any crime,” he stressed.
Tampuli questioned whether Ghanaians voted for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election to address the country’s economic challenges or to worsen them.
“We voted for a new government to come and fix our problems, or did we vote them to come and worsen our problems?” he asked.
The Gushegu MP also turned his attention to what he described as benefits being given to individuals who supported the NDC’s return to power.
He argued that if the government was rewarding people who contributed to its electoral victory, NDC supporters in Gushegu should also receive similar benefits.
“When you move from here, every constituent should advocate for their share of the goodies the NDC is dishing out to those they claim supported them to win power, because you all voted,” he said.
Tampuli maintained that many residents of Gushegu who voted for the NDC were still struggling and should not be left out of any government-related benefits.
“I know many people in Gushegu voted for the NDC, but they are still suffering,” he added.
He went on to call for NDC supporters in the constituency to receive the vehicles he claimed were being distributed to some individuals.
“Let’s ensure the NDC also gives you the Voxy vehicles they are handing out to people. I am advocating that Gushegu NDC members should be given their Voxy vehicles and should not be discriminated against,” Tampuli stated.
His comments add to growing political criticism surrounding GoldBod, its operations and the financial implications of Ghana’s gold purchasing programme, with the opposition demanding greater accountability over the management of public resources.
