Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has rejected claims that compromising videos or audio recordings exist linking him to alleged misconduct.
Speaking during a solidarity visit by Asafo companies and cultural troupes from Winneba to his residence in Accra on August 31, 2026, Afenyo-Markin said he had carried out his responsibilities with the level of dignity expected of someone occupying a senior parliamentary position.
He acknowledged that, like anyone else, he was not perfect, but insisted that he would not engage in reckless conduct that could bring embarrassment to himself, his family or the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“From day one, they entrusted me with this position. I have always acknowledged the weight of history to do what is right. I’m not a perfect guy. But I won’t be reckless. I know what I have to do,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin also pointed to the history of parliamentary leadership within the NPP, saying he was conscious of the responsibility associated with the office he currently occupies.
“I have discharged my duty as Minority Leader with all the dignity that must go with the office. I sit on a seat that JB Danquah, JH Mensah, Busia, Dombo, Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, and Paapa Owusu-Ankomah sat on. I don’t take NPP for granted. It’s a tradition I respect,” he stated.
He dismissed reports that videos or audio recordings had been obtained that could be used against him, describing the claims as part of the social media environment surrounding modern politics.
“So people talking about they have videos and audio, some are playing games on social media. Nobody has any video of me doing anything. Nobody has any audio of me doing anything to embarrass myself, my family, and the party. There’s nothing like that anywhere,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that politicians are often subjected to rumours and allegations in the social media era and said he was prepared to deal with such claims as part of public life.
“But it’s a social media era, so as a politician I have to accept some of these things. It will come my way,” he added.
His comments come amid heightened political tensions and a legal dispute involving Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over allegations made against the Minority Leader.
Afenyo-Markin has initiated defamation proceedings against Gyamfi and some media organisations over related claims, with the matter now before the courts.
