New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held talks with Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, and officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on ways to deepen cooperation between Ghana and Japan.
The meeting focused on several areas of mutual interest, including digitalisation, financial technology, artificial intelligence (AI), flood control and efforts to tackle illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Dr Bawumia described the discussions as productive and expressed appreciation to Ambassador Yoshimoto and the JICA team for the visit and engagement.
The former Vice President said the meeting provided an opportunity to explore practical areas where stronger cooperation could help address some of Ghana’s pressing development challenges.
Technology and digital innovation featured prominently in the discussions, with digitalisation, fintech and AI identified as areas with potential to support Ghana’s economic transformation.
The talks also touched on environmental and disaster-related concerns, particularly strategies for combating illegal mining and improving flood management.
Dr Bawumia emphasised the importance of continued international cooperation in finding sustainable solutions to such challenges.
He thanked the Japanese Ambassador and the JICA officials for their engagement and reaffirmed the importance of maintaining strong relations between Ghana and Japan.
