Parliament will not sit on July 10, 2026, to allow Members of Parliament from flood-affected constituencies to participate in the National General Cleaning Exercise, Speaker Alban Bagbin has announced.
The decision follows the government’s declaration of July 10 and 11 as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions affected by recent flooding.
The nationwide exercise is aimed at clearing choked drains and waterways to reduce the risk of further flooding.
Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin said the decision was taken after consultations with Parliament’s leadership on how MPs could support the national cleanup campaign.
He noted that Members representing affected constituencies would be able to provide leadership and work alongside residents during the exercise.
“Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, July 10, 2026, to enable Honourable Members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the cleanup exercise alongside their people. Definitely, it was a unanimous yes,” he said.
The Speaker added that Parliament would communicate its revised business schedule to Members in due course.
The National General Cleaning Exercise is expected to bring together residents, local authorities and other stakeholders to clear drains and improve sanitation in flood-prone communities across the affected regions.
