Members of Parliament from both the Majority and Minority sides set aside political differences to offer prayers for Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama.
A video shared on June 17, 2026, captured lawmakers standing together in Parliament as they prayed for the team’s success, expressing hope that Ghana would not only win the match but go on to make history at the tournament.
The prayer session reflected a rare moment of unity in the House, with legislators rallying behind the national team as they prepared to represent Ghana on the world stage.
During the prayer, MPs called for divine protection, strength and victory for the Black Stars.
“Precious Lord, this House of Parliament of the Republic of Ghana acknowledges the fact that you are a sovereign Lord and that the battle is ready, but deliverance comes from the Lord.
“You give Black Stars, our compatriots who are on the battlefield, the strength to come with the trophy. All we are looking for is that the trophy will come to this House.
“Today’s game is a win. All we are looking for from you is that Lord, they will score and score and score, and that will qualify them to the final. Black Stars will be the first African country to win. This is all we ask with our hearts, that God, you bring it to pass because in you we trust. Amen,” the legislators prayed.
The prayer session took place just hours before Ghana’s crucial Group L encounter against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto.
The Black Stars later rewarded the faith shown by lawmakers and supporters across the country with a dramatic 1-0 victory.
The match appeared destined to end in a draw before youngster Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to secure all three points for Ghana.
The winning goal sparked celebrations among Ghanaian fans both at home and abroad and handed head coach Carlos Queiroz a perfect start to his World Cup campaign.
The victory also strengthened Ghana’s hopes of progressing from Group L as the Black Stars prepare for their upcoming matches against England and Croatia.
For many supporters, Parliament’s show of unity and the team’s dramatic victory created a memorable day of national pride, with football once again bringing Ghanaians together beyond political divisions.
